6 Foods That Are Bad For Your Digestive Health

Digestive problems are no fun. In fact, they can be downright unpleasant, especially when experienced regularly.

Gastrointestinal issues can be caused by a variety of different factors, from stress to chronic medical conditions.

The foods you eat are also a common culprit when it comes to digestive problems. And when you’re experiencing digestive discomfort, there are certain foods you’re going to want to avoid, if you want to get your tummy back on track.

Want to know more? Then check out our guide to the foods to avoid when you’re experiencing digestive problems.

Spice Isn’t Always Nice

Spice isn’t for everyone. But for those of us who like a bit of a kick in our curry, it’s worth bearing in mind that this isn’t always the best thing for your stomach.

Spicy foods can stimulate the digestive system, so if you’re suffering from digestive problems they are best avoided.

Fiery foods can also cause indigestion in some people, so if you’re having digestive issues it’s best to steer clear of spices, especially if you are sensitive to them.

Forgo The Fat

Foods that are high in fat can spell disaster for your digestive system. If you’re wondering why, it’s because fatty foods can stimulate contractions in the digestive tract. This can either speed up digestion causing diarrhoea, or slow it down leading to constipation.

So, if you’re experiencing digestive discomfort it’s best to keep fatty foods off the menu. Some of the main culprits to avoid include butter, red meat, cheese and fried foods.

Cut the Caffeine

A cup of coffee not only stimulates your brain, it can also stimulate motility in your gastrointestinal tract too, causing the contents to move through your digestive system more quickly. This is why excessive caffeine consumption can lead to diarrhoea.

With this in mind, if you’re already suffering from diarrhoea, caffeine is best avoided, as it will only make things worse!

Oh and that’s not all; caffeine has also been known to trigger heartburn, too.

It’s not only tea and coffee you will want to avoid either. Remember, fizzy drinks are sources of caffeine too! Make sure to steer clear of these as well until your stomach troubles clear up.

Pass on Processed Foods

This next one probably isn’t a big surprise, but if you’re experiencing tummy trouble it’s best to keep away from processed foods too.

Not only do these foods increase your risk of conditions such as heart disease, refined carbohydrates such as white bread can also lead to bloating, abdominal cramps and a whole host of other gastrointestinal issues. So it’s best not to include too many of these foods in your diet.

Check Your Chocolate Cravings

Not only is chocolate bad for your waistline, it can have a negative impact on your digestive health too – sorry chocolate lovers!

That’s right, not only does chocolate contain caffeine (see above), it’s a natural diuretic too, meaning it can also lead to diarrhoea.

Avoid Acidic Foods

Acidic foods such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons and even tomatoes can also increase your risk of heartburn and other digestive problems. So make sure to avoid acidic foods such as these when experiencing digestive problems. Your stomach will thank you!

These are some of the most common foods that can cause problems for your digestive system. Whilst we all have different triggers when it come to digestive problems, avoiding foods such as these could help to reduce your risk of experiencing digestive distress.
