Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

If you’ve decided to book a colonoscopy in London, or even if you’re still undecided as to whether it’s the right procedure for you, then you’re probably wondering what you have to do to prepare your body to make sure that everything runs smoothly and is as comfortable as possible. As highly trained medical professionals with colonoscopy expertise, we can run you through the process now to help make things less stressful for you on the day itself.

The Week Before

Although getting ready properly and ensuring that your colon has been entirely emptied can take a little bit of time, it is an essential part of the procedure – and if you want the best results then it is simply essential that you don’t cheat. So, a few days before the colonoscopy itself is taking place, move yourself onto a low-fiber diet which is free from fibrous foods such as raw fruit and veg, nuts and whole grains. We know that in the past we’ve always preached the benefits of eating a lot of fiber – and most of the time that advice still stands – but this is a special case!

If you are given a specific diet plan to follow in the weeks leading up to your colonoscopy then, of-course, you should defer to that, but otherwise follow the advice above and make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of clear fluids. The idea is to avoid eating anything which might leave a residue in your colon, so you should generally be safe with small amounts of milk and yoghurt, broth-based soups, peeled and cooked vegetables and tender meat.

The Day Before

Ideally, the day before your colonoscopy you will want to stop consuming solid foods entirely, instead consuming clear broth, apple juice, black coffee or tea – basically, any clear liquids should be safe. It is especially important to steer clear of any red fluids which your specialist might mistake for blood! Your doctor will clarify by giving exact instructions about what you should and shouldn’t consume, however these examples should give you a clear idea of what sort of thing to expect.

On the Day

The final part of your colonoscopy preparation will involve emptying the colon entirely – this can either happen on the morning of your procedure or the night before. Your specialist will prescribe a specific bowl preparation based on their preferences and your specific needs, and it is absolutely essential that you follow this as it helps to make the procedure run smoothly.

Here at the London Gastroenterology Centre your comfort is our key concern, so you can rest assured that we will make sure that the entire process is smooth and pleasant for each and every one of our clients. Whilst you are in the last stages of your bowel preparation you may find that it is more comfortable to use wet wipes as opposed to traditional toilet roll. Wear loose clothing, and be prepared to spend a large amount of time in or near the bathroom, with plenty of music or reading materials ready to help you pass the time.

As we have already mentioned, the most important thing that you can do when preparing for your colonoscopy is listen to the exact requirements that your clinician has given you – these tips are simply meant as guidelines for those of you who are still wondering what to expect. If you have any queries nearer the time then your personal specialist is always the best person to turn to, however for more general inquiries as to our services you can contact us any time, online or at 020 7183 7965.
