Winter Vomiting Bug

Stomach bugs are very common at this time of year, but there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. It is important to practice proper hygiene when you are healthy, but you should be particularly careful to stop the germs spreading when you or someone you are caring for is ill.

Stay At Home When You’re Ill

If you have diarrhoea and vomiting, it is important to stay at home. You need lots of rest to help you get better and if you go out, you could spread the bug to other people, including those who are more vulnerable to complications. Ideally, you should stay away from other people, particularly those who are vulnerable such as children and the elderly for 48 hours after your symptoms have gone.

Take Care of Yourself

Drinking plenty of fluids is the best thing you can do when you have diarrhoea and vomiting. You might also want to take some pain relief to tackle symptoms like fever or aches and pains. Over the counter medication can also help with diarrhoea treatment for adults, but try to get someone else to pick it up from the pharmacy for you so that you don’t have to go out.

Know When To Seek Help

Although you will usually be able to manage at home, you should ask your doctor for advice on diarrhoea treatment if it goes on for more than a few days or if you notice severe symptoms such as very painful cramps, blood in the stool, or dehydration. Children and older people are particularly vulnerable to complications like diarrhoea, and may need additional care if it is severe. Unless it is an emergency, it is best not to go into the clinic or hospital for diarrhoea treatment, as there is a risk you could spread the illness to other people.
